This story out of Germany is one of the most gruesome things I've ever read.

A palliative care doc in Germany has been charged with 15 murders of different patients. According to the story, the doctor would break into patients' homes, drug and kill them, and sometimes set their houses on fire to cover up the crime.

Yeah...

There were four known cases mentioned by authorities at the time of his arrest last year. On Wednesday, the office announced it filed 15 counts of murder with malice against the 40-year-old.

'To commit the crimes, he is alleged to have administered an anesthetic inducer and then a muscle relaxant to his patients without medical indication and without their knowledge and consent,' the prosecutor's office said.

Death occurred within a few minutes, prosecutors said, because the muscle relaxant paralyzed the respiratory muscle and caused respiratory arrest.

Each victim was essentially a hospice patient in the nursing service the doctor worked for. The patients were all killed in a span of less than three years.

And, while the 40-year-old medical doctor has been charged with 15 murders so far, the total might be much, much higher.

Berlin police and prosecutors have examined 395 cases, and suspicion was 'confirmed' in at least 95 cases. The prosecutor's office said another 75 investigations are still ongoing.

Nearly 400 deaths are being investigated because they might trace back to this guy. At least 95 of those are serious inquiries where the doctor is a suspect. And 75 cases that might be connected to the doctor are being investigated as we speak.

This could be a serial killer of a truly historic and infamous nature.

Due to the severity of the allegations, prosecutors said they are seeking not only a conviction in his case but also a 'lifelong professional ban and subsequent preventive detention.'

Yeah ... I think once you've been charged with murdering 15 of your patients then a "lifelong professional ban" is sort of the minimum punishment for such acts.

The real tragedy is that they aren't trying to put him six feet under for the heinous deeds.
