I bet they're not laughing now.
If you missed it, in 2023, Jzamir Keys and Jesus Ayala filmed themselves hitting retired police chief Andreas Probst as the 64-year-old rode his bicycle in Las Vegas.
Probst's daughter received an alert from her dad's Apple Watch telling her that he'd taken a hard fall. After failing to reach him on the phone, she drove to his location and discovered him dead on the side of the road.
While being arrested (the two uploaded their video to social media, so it wasn't hard to find them), Jesus Ayala laughed at being arrested and told officers he'd "be out in 30 days."
It's just a f*******, ah, hit-and-run. Slap on the wrist.
Things didn't go so well for them in court. As it turns out, people tend to get angry when you murder a loving father who dedicated his life to serving his community, especially when you murdered him by running him over with your car.
Both men are now adults (Ayala is 20 and Keys is 18). They decided to plead guilty as part of a proposed deal in October. Ayala, who was driving, has received 20 years to life in prison. Keys, the passenger, received 18 years in prison.
The only reason they avoided the death penalty is because they were minors when they killed Probst.
On the morning they killed Probst, the men were purposely hitting cyclists to knock them off their bikes. They used a stolen Hyundai to hit a 72-year-old man, then hit Probst, then went on to steal two more vehicles that day for funsies.
The video shows them giggling as they killed Probst, who had moved to Vegas to work in global security after 35 years of service in Bell, California.
Like I said, I bet they're not laughing now.
