This poll was conducted by Zachary Donnini and Havish Netla of Decision Desk HQ. The poll looked at names in 34 states that had at least 1,500 registrants with a given name. Using this data, they could then calculate which names had the highest affiliation with a given party. In the number one spots, 96% of all people named "Eboni" were registered as Democrat, versus 82% of all people named "Landen" being registered as Republican.
Their results look similar to polling from the Washington Post in September of 2024:
As WaPo noted, whether a name is right-leaning versus left-leaning seems determined the most by age and race.
We see old Republicans and young Democrats all named Terrell, Dwayne and Darrell — names that further analysis shows either belong to younger Black men or older White ones. We also see that pattern with women's names that lost popularity among White people: Janet, Darlene and Karla have grown more Democratic as they've grown more Hispanic. Similarly, Joy has moved left as it has been adopted by more Black women, and Kathy followed suit as its popularity grew among their Asian and Hispanic friends.
On the new poll, the key indicator for a Democrat seems to be black women born between 1970 and 1990:
As for the Republican names...
In 2024, WaPo noted the idea that "younger voters lean left." The 2024 Election, however, showed a hard shift to the right among the youngest voters, particularly the 18-21 crowd that has served as a key demographic for Democrats for the past 60 years.
Putting the racial aspect to the side, the data in this new poll seems to confirm that the most hardcore Republicans are young men, while the most hardcore Democrats are older middle-aged women.
