The headline says it all.

Tyrone Tunnel, 30, entered a Macy's department store in Philadelphia Monday morning around 10:45 a.m. and tried stealing several hats.

He was caught by a security guard and was let go. Security did not call the cops. They just let him go.

So, what does this dude do next?

He comes back to the store just 15 minutes later and "immediately" goes on a stabbing spree, attacking security guards.

He killed one security guard and wounded another - they were both rushed to Jefferson Hospital. The 30-year-old guard who was stabbed in the neck was pronounced dead there, while the other 23-year-old guard is now recovering with wounds on the face and arm.

Interim Police Commissioner John Stanford Jr. explained the situation:

[Tunnel] runs directly to that security guard with a knife already exposed and begins to stab him.

There's a scuffle with the second security guard trying to save the first guard that's stabbed and that security guard sustained several stab wounds as well or slash wounds as well.

Tunnel fled and was later arrested at a Philadelphia subway station.

Just a tragic situation right here, few weeks before the holiday. These security officers are just doing their jobs.

Police Commissioner Stanford told the New York Post that crime, including shoplifting, has been rampant and that Macy's has dealt with one of the highest theft rates in the City Center. The store is right across the street from City Hall.

Just this year alone, Macy's has reported more than 250 thefts.

It is an ongoing situation, an ongoing problem.

What started as a retail theft has ended in a homicide here. So again it's still a very important crime that we have to continue to work toward making sure we see a little bit of a decrease in.

Macy's closed down for a couple of days but is now reopened.

A company spokesperson said, "We are heartbroken about the tragedy that took place today at Macy's Center City. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority."
