As-salamu alaykum, my friends. Ahlan wa salhan fi Michigan!

Ameera Hashwi is a 25-year-old law-school graduate from Dearborn Heights, an Arab-majority suburb of Detroit, Michigan. Anyone who hasn't been through the Dearborn area might find themselves a bit culture-shocked when trying to read local signs.

"Fairuz"

Hashwi attended Wayne State University Law School.

The Miss Michigan organization congratulated Hashwi, who reportedly dazzled the audience and judges with an Arabic song, "Koul Chi Aam Yekhlass" ("Everything is Ending") by Lebanese singer Majida El Roumi.

The competition reportedly emphasized social action, and Hashwi picked the organization Step Up & Serve, which "encourag[es] physical fitness & giving back" (no further information about the program is easily found online).

While many people attacked the pageant for picking a Muslim winner, others pointed out that left-wing preference for minority categories as an extension of Marxist ideology makes it impossible for the public to know if Hashwi was picked for her poise, vocal ability, and social dedication, or simply because she wasn't white, Christian, etc.

Until next time, Michigan wishes you a hearty maa salaama!
