A 55-year-old Canadian tourist in the Caribbean saw a shark swimming just off the beach and did what everyone seems to do these days.

She ran out to get a selfie.

Yes, we've covered enough of these "take a selfie with a dangerous predator" stories that I'm sure you already know how it turned out.

But for the sake of educating the public, we'll share the results anyway:

The shark bit off the woman's hands!

[Warning: Blurred but still graphic]

According to the local authorities she 'attempted to engage' with the shark when the 1.83m (6 foot)-long predatory fish struck off Thompson Cove Beach in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

It is understood she had one of her arms amputated below the wrist and the other halfway up her forearm.

Her husband jumped into the water and attacked the shark to drive it away, while others on the beach quickly attended to the woman, using their clothes to try and stem the bleeding.

Authorities say it was likely a tiger shark or a bull shark, which often hunt in shallow waters and can mistake people for prey like sea turtles.

The woman has since returned to Canada to continue treatment.

Please think before you whip out that phone. Please.
