Judge Jeffrey Clothier of Michigan recently came up with an amazing way to deal with shoplifters: Make them wash cars at the store where they shoplifted.
From the article:
Walmart shoplifters of Michigan's Genesee County District better beware because Judge Jeffrey Clothier of the Genesee County District Court has devised a unique form of punishment for the crime.
Anyone convicted of shoplifting in the judge's court will be ordered to appear at the local Walmart to wash cars for free as their community service.
But of course, someone balked at the idea of having to work because of their bad behavior. These people steal from stores rather than work to buy things after all, and they appealed the sentence.
The higher court overturned Clothier's ruling almost immediately.
Chief Judge William Crawford II overruled him, saying the junior jurist first should have sought approval from him and other court officials.
‘This is especially true where the proposed alternative punishment deviates from the usual and accepted methods,' Crawford said in a statement on Friday, adding that "Walmart Washes" will not be taking place as reported.'

Turns out, Walmart didn't like the idea either:
He said he had the endorsement of local store managers. But after hearing about the plan, officials at Walmart headquarters in Arkansas told him they didn't want the car washes to be offered on store property.
Undeterred, the judge figured he would simply find another site for soap, water, buckets and towels. With Crawford's order, however, the car wash is finished.
So the judge is now looking for other creative ways to solve this problem.
'I'm frustrated,' Clothier said. 'I'm still going to try to come up with a creative way to solve this problem. … I had 37 new Walmart theft offenses two days ago. In the last month, it's been well over 100.'
But how does one solve a problem that their superiors don't want solved?
