The epicenter of the quake wasn't in Thailand, but hundreds of miles away in Burma (Myanmar), which is ruled by a military dictatorship that is unlikely to share information on fatalities with the outside world.
The U.S. Geological Survey agency estimates a 35% chance that fatalities are between 1,000 and 10,000 people, with a 29% chance that the fatalities reach as high as 100,000.
It also estimates that as much as 30% of Burma's GDP will be lost due to damage from the quake.
High probable casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread. Past red alerts have required a national or international response.
