A newborn was found in the dumpster of an apartment complex in North Austin over the weekend.

Residents at the complex heard a newborn crying shortly after 1 PM on Saturday, and following the sound of her voice, found the infant facedown in the dumpster.

Perry Lewis jumped into the dumpster to get the baby out while another resident called 911.

Lewis told CBS Austin,

She saved herself. She saved herself, you know what I mean? She cried. She has a God-given voice. She cried up out of that dumpster. About 40, 50 feet away, man, my neighbor heard her.

The infant still had her umbilical cord attached, indicating that she was born sometime earlier that day.

Another neighbor, Lerrssy Frausto, attempted to provide first aid to the newborn until EMS arrived to take over.

Frausto, obviously emotional over the experience, told reporters,

Just seeing her covered in blood like that and dirt and trash, like she just wasn't nothing, hurt me. The way that she was found in the trash can - upside down, with her head facing the trash can - hurt me.

...

I mean... it's not illegal to take your child to a fire station and drop them off. It's not. I mean, you could have knocked on someone's door, like anything. But throwing the baby in the trash is just insane.

Paramedics soon arrived, taking the infant to Dell Children's Hospital. The baby, whom the neighbors responsible for rescuing her nicknamed "Miracle Angel," is safe and healthy.

The Austin Police Department is still investigating the case, but so far, the mother has not been located, and no charges have been filed.
