From Ohio this week we have a story almost too horrific for words.
Via local news:
A pit bull fatally attacked a 1-year-old girl last week in Tuscarawas County. ...
[Officials] said deputies arrived to find the 1-year-old girl with bites to the face and throat.
The victim, who was identified in an online fundraiser as Blakely Blosser, was pronounced dead on scene.
A GoFundMe set up for the Blosser family says mother and father Derrick and Nicole lost baby Blakely in the "unimaginable tragedy."
This tragedy is, indeed, almost unthinkable — so much so that you almost literally don't want to think about it, let alone talk about it.
But we need to talk about it. We need to talk about the danger that pitbulls pose, especially to children.
Folks, we're not trying to make some sort of supercharged controversial statement here. The fact is, this isn't a controversial position. Pitbulls are dangerous. This is well-known and completely recognizable at this point.
I mean, look: In the course of researching this story, we came across another, unrelated vicious pitbull attack in Ohio:
Four people are recovering following a brutal pit bull attack in Franklinton on the Fourth of July.
We'll spare you the horrific photos of the attack victims and instead just note that the two dogs in that case literally left the scene blood-spattered:
A small selection of other recent incidents:
This is not an accident, folks. Pit bulls are far and away the most common breed involved in deadly dog attacks:
We have to stop pretending this is normal or okay. We need to start regulating this breed and getting it out of everyday life — and especially away from children.
We'll let Allie Beth Stuckey — one of the great pit bull realists of the Internet — have the last word on this:
