According to The New York Post, convicted cop-killer Mikal Mahdi — who chose to be executed by a firing squad — did not die instantly as intended.
But an autopsy later revealed that none of the bullets hit his heart directly, and that his chest showed only two bullet wounds instead of three, according to a disturbing report by NPR.
The bullets that struck him injured his liver and other internal organs and allowed his heart to keep beating as he remained alive for roughly a minute, experts said.
The incident sparked debate about not only the use of firing squads but also whether or not criminals being executed should be guaranteed "painless" deaths. Conservative personality Matt Walsh, a man of many blunt opinions, had his own take:
Matt's got a point. Executions are a punishment and are not intended to be pleasant. But a botched firing squad, leaving a guy to bleed out? Should that be acceptable?
