Justice David Souter, a George H.W. Bush appointee who spent 19 years on the Supreme Court before retiring, sadly passed away Thursday in his New Hampshire home. He was 85 years old.
Souter was referred to as a "moderate" on the court.
His moderate positions surprised and disappointed many Republicans, who had hoped Souter would solidify as conservative the seat vacated by Justice William Brennan, a longtime leader of the court's liberal wing.
Just five years after his appointment, the conservative Weekly Standard branded Souter a 'stealth justice,' excoriating his position as 'one of the staunchest liberals on the court.'
Souter sided with the libs upholding Roe Vs. Wade, he ruled against schools being allowed to deliver public invocations at events, and cast the deciding vote to ban the Ten Commandments from public schools.
However, colleagues on both sides seemed to appreciate the man.
RIP Justice Souter.
