Alabama woman with two uteruses is pregnant with one baby in each womb

Kelsey Hatcher found out that she had two uteruses when she was 17 years old (they're side by side and roughly half the size a normal uterus), and for her entire adult life, that hasn‘t mattered much.

She's even had three normal pregnancies and has three kids, ages 6, 4, and 2.

But when she found out she was pregnant again, Hatcher felt like something was different.

At her first ultrasound, the tech assured her that the baby was fine.

"As the tech scanned and said everything looked great, I confirmed, ‘There is only one, right?'" Hatcher said.

"She smiled and said yes, so I took a breath and relaxed. But I then told her, ‘I'm not sure if it's on my chart, but I do have a second uterus, just so you aren't alarmed.'"

The tech slowly moved the wand over to the other side, and surprise…

Twins!

"All I could do was laugh," she said. "I immediately called my husband, Caleb, to tell him, as he was not at the appointment with me. He and I just laughed together."

While double uteruses happens in 0.3% of women, getting pregnant with twins with a baby in both is crazy rare.

Dr. Shweta Patel, Hatcher's obstetrician said,

"It's rare enough to have a uterine didelphys, more commonly known as a double uterus, but even more rare to have a pregnancy in each uterus. I had to see the ultrasound myself to believe it.

"The most unpredictable part is delivery," Patel said. "Do we deliver vaginally? Do we deliver by C-section? Besides published case studies, there is limited guidance."

At least for now, they're going to see if she can deliver normally, hoping labor starts in one uterus first, and then they'll induce labor in the other.

And if all goes as planned, they‘re going to do this on December 22.

You know what that means…

Christmas Babies!

Which means only one set of presents for their birthday/Christmas.

Brilliant planning, mom and dad!!!
